When to use

Card and QR readers — the right choice for these access control scenarios

Visitor access

Pre-registered visitors receive a QR code via WhatsApp or email. They scan it at the door — time-limited, single-use, no enrollment required. A QR code reader for access control eliminates the front-desk bottleneck for visitor management.

Membership-based entry

Gym members, co-working tenants, and apartment residents use a membership card or QR code for building and facility access. The reader validates membership status and tier-level access automatically.

Low-security zones

Break rooms, parking gates, and common areas don't need face recognition. A proximity card reader handles entry at a fraction of the cost. Reserve biometric access control systems for high-security zones.

Mixed-security buildings

Use Fortuna's face recognition devices at the main entrance and secure zones. Use card and QR readers at internal doors, elevators, and common areas. All readers connect to the same Checkmate NxT panel — one system, multiple authentication levels.

Events and temporary access

Issue time-limited QR codes for conference attendees, contractors, or temporary workers. No card printing. No enrollment. Codes expire automatically after the access window ends.

Why Fortuna

Why choose Fortuna's access control readers over generic imports

1

Native compatibility with the Fortuna ecosystem

Our card and QR readers connect to Checkmate NxT panels, pair with our biometric readers, and integrate with SmartFace software — all without middleware, converters, or compatibility workarounds. One vendor. Everything works together.

2

IP67 waterproof (MicroQR 2)

The MicroQR 2 is IP67 rated — fully dust-tight and protected against water immersion. Built for outdoor gates, parking entries, and weather-exposed installations that see rain, dust, and direct sun year-round.

3

Wiegand 26/34 — universal compatibility

Even if you don't use Fortuna panels, our readers work with any Wiegand-compatible access control panel on the market. Replace your existing card readers without changing your panels.

4

Multi-mode access from a single device

The MicroQR 2 reads QR codes, EM Proximity cards, and MIFARE cards from a single device — three authentication modes, one reader. The MicroDUAL handles both EM and MIFARE without needing two separate readers.

Part of a complete biometric access control system — not a standalone device

Card and QR readers are peripherals that connect to access control panels. A reader reads the credential and sends a Wiegand signal to the Checkmate NxT panel. The panel controls the door relay. SmartFace software manages access rules, logs every entry, and generates reports.

Pair card and QR readers with biometric readers for a mixed-security setup — all on the same panel and software platform:

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about card and QR readers for access control

Can a QR code reader for access control work with any access control panel?
Yes. The MicroQR 2 outputs standard Wiegand 26/34 signals, making it compatible with any Wiegand-compatible access control panel — including Fortuna’s Checkmate NxT and third-party panels from other manufacturers. It also supports RS485 and RS232 for integration flexibility.
Under 200 milliseconds. The QR reading range is 0–20 centimetres. The MicroQR 2 reads both dynamic (time-limited) and static QR codes, making it suitable for both permanent member access and temporary visitor access.
Yes. Fortuna’s Checkmate NxT and NxT+ panels accept Wiegand inputs from any reader type — face recognition, fingerprint, card, or QR. You can mix biometric access control systems on high-security doors with card readers on common-area doors, all managed from one software platform.
Yes. The MicroQR 2 is IP67 rated — fully dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water. It’s built for outdoor installations including gate entries, parking barriers, and weather-exposed walls.
EM Proximity (125 KHz) cards are the older, simpler, and cheaper standard. MIFARE (13.56 MHz) cards are newer, support encryption, and offer higher security. The MicroDUAL reads both — useful for organizations transitioning between card standards or multi-tenant buildings with mixed card types.

Yes. With Fortuna’s visitor management system, pre-registered visitors receive a time-limited QR code via WhatsApp or email. They scan it at a MicroQR 2 reader at the door. The QR code expires automatically after the visit window — no card collection needed. See visitor management.
